Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 1

Oleuropein is a phenolic compound found in olive leaves and olive oil, noted for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. There is some emerging scientific interest in the potential neuroprotective effects of oleuropein, particularly due to its capacity to reduce oxidative stress, inhibit neuroinflammation, and possibly prevent the aggregation of misfolded proteins—processes implicated in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's Disease (PD). Preclinical studies, mainly in cell cultures and animal models, have suggested that oleuropein may protect dopaminergic neurons against toxins that induce Parkinson-like symptoms, possibly through modulation of oxidative pathways and prevention of α-synuclein aggregation.

However, there is currently no substantial clinical evidence or large-scale human studies demonstrating oleuropein’s efficacy in treating or significantly altering the course of Parkinson’s Disease. Most findings are preliminary and limited to laboratory settings, and the translation of these results to human patients remains unproven at this time. As such, while there is a scientific rationale for further investigation, the evidence base is weak (rated 1/5), and oleuropein should not be considered a validated or standard therapy for Parkinson's Disease outside of research contexts.
