Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Paeoniflorin is a bioactive compound derived from the roots of Paeonia lactiflora, a plant commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine. In recent years, several preclinical studies have explored its neuroprotective effects in the context of Parkinson's Disease (PD). Research in cellular and animal models indicates that paeoniflorin can attenuate dopaminergic neuronal loss, reduce oxidative stress, inhibit neuroinflammation, and modulate apoptosis pathways—mechanisms implicated in the progression of PD (Zhao et al., 2017; Zhang et al., 2017). These studies suggest that paeoniflorin may help protect neurons from degeneration and improve motor function in PD models.

However, there is currently a lack of robust clinical trial data in humans to support the efficacy or safety of paeoniflorin for PD patients. Most of the evidence comes from laboratory and animal research, and there is no regulatory approval or established medical guideline recommending its use for this indication. Thus, while the scientific rationale is plausible and the preclinical evidence is promising, its translation to clinical use remains unverified. The rating of 2 reflects this early stage of scientific validation, with more research needed before paeoniflorin can be considered a proven or recommended therapy for Parkinson’s Disease.
