Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is prized as a general tonic and for supporting various aspects of health, including vitality and longevity. Its use for neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is rooted primarily in traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence. While a few preliminary laboratory studies suggest that Reishi may have neuroprotective or anti-inflammatory properties—possibly relevant for neurodegenerative diseases like PD—clinical trials in humans are lacking. Most of the evidence for its use in Parkinson’s is anecdotal, based on traditional herbal formulas and historical usage, rather than direct, high-quality scientific research. Currently, there is no strong clinical data to confirm its efficacy or safety specifically for Parkinson’s Disease. Thus, while Reishi is sometimes included in complementary approaches to neurological health, its use for PD is justified mainly by tradition, not by modern scientific validation.
