Evidence supporting the use of: Shilajit
For the health condition: Parkinson's Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Shilajit is a traditional Ayurvedic remedy that has been used for centuries in India and other parts of Asia for general health, vitality, and aging-related conditions. Its use for neurological disorders, including Parkinson's Disease (PD), is primarily based on traditional medicine rather than robust scientific evidence. In Ayurvedic practice, shilajit is thought to enhance energy and cognitive function, and it has sometimes been recommended for symptoms resembling those of Parkinson's Disease. However, high-quality clinical trials in humans specifically examining shilajit for PD are lacking. Some preclinical (animal or in vitro) studies suggest that shilajit contains fulvic acid and other compounds with antioxidant and neuroprotective properties, which could theoretically be beneficial in neurodegenerative diseases like PD. Nevertheless, there is insufficient scientific validation at this time to recommend shilajit as a treatment for Parkinson's Disease. Its application is mainly justified by traditional use, and the current evidence for its efficacy in this specific context is weak (rated 1 out of 5).
