Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Uncaria rhynchophylla (commonly known as Gou Teng) has a history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, particularly for conditions such as tremors, convulsions, and hypertension. In recent years, its application in supporting or treating Parkinson's Disease (PD) has received some attention in scientific research, primarily in preclinical studies. Animal and in vitro studies suggest that Uncaria rhynchophylla and its alkaloid constituents (such as rhynchophylline) may exert neuroprotective effects relevant to PD. These effects include antioxidative activity, inhibition of neuroinflammation, modulation of dopaminergic neurons, and suppression of abnormal protein aggregation (such as alpha-synuclein phosphorylation), which are implicated in Parkinson's pathogenesis. Some studies have shown that extracts of Uncaria rhynchophylla can improve motor deficits and reduce neuronal damage in PD animal models. However, human clinical trials are lacking, and the evidence remains preliminary. While traditional use for tremors and related symptoms provides some rationale, the direct scientific validation for use in PD is not robust. Therefore, while there is scientific interest and some mechanistic support, the current level of evidence supporting its use for Parkinson's Disease is modest, warranting a rating of 2 out of 5.
