Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bupleurum, primarily known in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its use in formulas like Xiao Chai Hu Tang, is traditionally used to "harmonize" liver function and relieve what is termed as "Shaoyang disorders." There is some historical precedent for its inclusion in formulations intended to address swelling or inflammation in various glands, including anecdotal references to its potential benefits for swollen parotid glands (as seen in conditions like mumps). However, these references are indirect and not a mainstay of Bupleurum’s traditional indications.

There is very little, if any, direct mention in either classical TCM texts or modern herbal compendia specifically recommending Bupleurum for general parotid or salivary gland support as a primary indication. Modern scientific research does not support a specific effect of Bupleurum on salivary gland function or parotid health; most research focuses on liver health, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties.

In summary, while Bupleurum may be used in traditional herbal formulas that have broad indications, there is only weak traditional justification for its use in supporting the parotid (salivary) glands, and virtually no scientific validation for this specific body system.
