Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ginkgo flavonglycosides, extracted from the leaves of the Ginkgo biloba tree, have a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in East Asia. Their primary use has been to support cognitive function and improve circulation. The rationale for their use in peripheral neuropathy is based mainly on their purported ability to enhance blood flow and provide neuroprotective effects. Some traditional practitioners have recommended Ginkgo for neuropathies, especially those attributed to vascular insufficiency, because improved microcirculation is thought to benefit nerve health. However, scientific evidence supporting Ginkgo flavonglycosides specifically for peripheral neuropathy is limited and inconsistent. A small number of clinical studies and animal experiments suggest that Ginkgo extract may alleviate some neuropathic symptoms, potentially through antioxidant effects, inhibition of platelet-activating factor, and vasodilation, but these studies often suffer from methodological limitations or small sample sizes. Systematic reviews and large-scale meta-analyses have not found robust, consistent evidence for its efficacy in treating peripheral neuropathy compared to placebo or other interventions. Consequently, while there is a tradition of use and some preliminary scientific rationale, high-quality evidence is lacking, and most clinical guidelines do not recommend Ginkgo flavonglycosides for this condition.
