Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Vitamin B12, specifically in its active forms such as deoxyadenosylcobalamin, is scientifically validated for use in the treatment and support of peripheral neuropathy, particularly in cases where neuropathy is caused by B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 is essential for normal nerve function and myelin sheath integrity; deficiency can lead to demyelination and subsequent neuropathic symptoms including numbness, tingling, and weakness in the extremities. Numerous clinical studies and case reports have demonstrated that B12 supplementation can improve or reverse neuropathic symptoms in individuals with documented B12 deficiency. Guidelines from major medical organizations, including the American Academy of Neurology, recommend B12 supplementation for neuropathy when deficiency is confirmed. However, the evidence supporting the use of B12 in treating neuropathy not related to B12 deficiency is less robust and largely inconclusive. Some studies have explored high-dose B12 as a treatment for diabetic or idiopathic neuropathy, but results have been mixed and generally not sufficient to recommend routine use in those populations. In summary, there is strong scientific evidence for the use of B12 in deficiency-related neuropathy (evidence rating: 4/5), but limited justification for its use in other forms of neuropathy.
