Evidence supporting the use of: Ginger
For the health condition: Perspiration (deficient)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has been traditionally used in various systems of medicine, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, as an agent to stimulate perspiration, especially when sweating is deficient. In TCM, fresh ginger (Sheng Jiang) is categorized among herbs that "release the exterior" and is believed to induce mild sweating to help expel external pathogens such as wind-cold from the surface of the body. This is especially used at the onset of colds or when there is inadequate sweating during illness, which is thought to hinder recovery. Ginger's warming properties are considered to help "open the pores" and promote gentle sweating. Historical texts and herbal pharmacopoeias consistently reference ginger's diaphoretic (sweat-inducing) action. However, scientific validation for ginger's effectiveness specifically in treating or supporting "perspiration (deficient)" is limited. While ginger is known to cause a warming sensation and may modestly increase peripheral circulation, rigorous clinical studies directly linking ginger to enhanced perspiration in cases of deficiency are lacking. Most modern research on ginger focuses on its anti-inflammatory, antiemetic, and digestive benefits rather than its effects on sweat production. Therefore, while ginger's use for deficient perspiration is well-rooted in tradition and supported by historical practice, the scientific evidence for this specific indication is weak or indirect.
