Evidence supporting the use of: Bacillus (mixed)
For the body system: Peyer’s patches
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Bacillus (mixed species, such as Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus coagulans) are spore-forming probiotic bacteria that have been studied for their immunomodulatory effects, including interactions with the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT), of which Peyer’s patches are a critical component. Scientific studies have shown that certain Bacillus strains can survive gastric passage and transiently colonize the gut, where they interact with immune cells in the intestinal mucosa. In animal studies and some small human trials, Bacillus supplementation has been shown to enhance the production of secretory IgA and modulate cytokine responses, which are functions associated with Peyer’s patches. For example, Bacillus subtilis has been reported to stimulate dendritic cells and macrophages in the gut, leading to increased IgA secretion, a process mediated through Peyer’s patches. Additionally, Bacillus-based probiotics have been found to influence the balance of T-helper cell responses, further supporting their role in mucosal immunity. However, while there is a growing body of evidence supporting the immunomodulatory effects of Bacillus species, direct, high-quality clinical studies specifically examining their effects on Peyer’s patches in humans are limited. Thus, the scientific basis for using Bacillus to support the Peyer’s patches is plausible and supported by preclinical and some clinical data, but more targeted research is needed to confirm efficacy and mechanisms in humans.
