Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bifidobacterium species are widely studied probiotics with well-documented roles in supporting gut health and immune function. The Peyer’s patches are lymphoid nodules in the small intestine that play a pivotal role in the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT), initiating immune responses to antigens present in the gut. Scientific research has shown that certain Bifidobacterium strains can modulate immune activity within the gut, including the enhancement of IgA production and stimulation of dendritic cells within Peyer’s patches.

Animal studies have demonstrated that administration of Bifidobacterium (e.g., B. breve, B. longum, B. bifidum) can increase the size and cellularity of Peyer’s patches, upregulate expression of immune-related genes, and improve resistance to intestinal pathogens. Some human studies using Bifidobacterium-containing probiotics report increased fecal IgA levels, suggesting enhanced mucosal immunity, though direct effects on Peyer’s patches in humans are less clearly established.

While most evidence comes from preclinical models, the immunomodulatory effects of Bifidobacterium are considered scientifically plausible, and their use to support gut immune function—including the activity of Peyer’s patches—has a moderate level of scientific support. However, more direct human studies are needed to clarify the extent of these effects.
