Calcium Fructo-Oligosaccharides (Ca-FOS) are a form of prebiotic fiber that can positively influence gut health and, by extension, the immune system. Peyer’s patches are specialized lymphoid tissues in the small intestine that play a crucial role in immune surveillance and the generation of immune responses to gut antigens. Several studies have demonstrated that fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), including calcium-enriched forms, promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species. These bacteria produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which have been shown to stimulate the immune system and may enhance the function and development of Peyer’s patches.

Animal studies, particularly in mice, have shown that dietary FOS can increase the size and activity of Peyer’s patches and enhance secretory IgA production, an important antibody for mucosal immunity. This suggests a mechanism whereby Ca-FOS could support the immune functions associated with Peyer’s patches. However, direct clinical studies in humans specifically linking Ca-FOS supplementation to enhanced Peyer’s patch function are limited. Most human research is indirect, focusing on general immune markers and gut microbiota modulation rather than Peyer’s patches per se.

In summary, there is scientific rationale and moderate experimental evidence, mainly from animal studies, that Ca-FOS can support the immune system through effects on the gut and Peyer’s patches, but more targeted human research is needed for conclusive validation.
