Evidence supporting the use of: Diosmin
For the health condition: Phlebitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Diosmin is a flavonoid found in citrus fruits and is commonly used in combination with hesperidin for the management of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), hemorrhoids, and related venous disorders. Its use in phlebitis (inflammation of the veins, often associated with superficial venous thrombosis) is supported by a moderate body of scientific evidence, primarily from European clinical studies. Diosmin is thought to improve venous tone, reduce capillary permeability, and possess anti-inflammatory properties. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown that micronized purified flavonoid fractions (MPFF), which include diosmin, can reduce symptoms such as pain, swelling, and heaviness in patients with chronic venous disorders, and may accelerate the resolution of symptoms in superficial vein thrombosis (a form of phlebitis). The European Society for Vascular Surgery and other expert guidelines recommend MPFF as an adjunctive therapy for these conditions. However, while diosmin is widely used for venous inflammation and related symptoms, high-quality evidence specifically focused on phlebitis is limited. Most studies include patients with broader venous disorders, and results are often extrapolated to phlebitis. Adverse effects are generally mild. Overall, the evidence for diosmin in phlebitis is moderate (rating 3), with some clinical validation but not to the highest degree of scientific rigor.
