Evidence supporting the use of: Glandular Tissues
For the body system: Pituitary (anterior)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Glandular tissues, specifically from animal sources, have been used in traditional naturopathic and alternative medicine as supplements intended to "support" the function of human glands, including the anterior pituitary. The rationale, rooted in the concept of "like supports like," suggests that consuming animal pituitary tissue may provide nutrients or factors that benefit the human pituitary gland. This practice dates back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, prior to the advent of modern endocrinology and purified hormone therapies. Despite its historical use, there is very limited scientific evidence to support the efficacy of pituitary glandular supplements for supporting pituitary function. Modern research does not substantiate that orally ingested pituitary tissue or extracts meaningfully influence human pituitary health, as most proteins and peptides are broken down in the digestive tract. Furthermore, safety concerns have arisen, including the theoretical risk of transmitting infectious agents such as prions. Today, mainstream medicine does not endorse the use of glandular extracts for pituitary support, and regulatory agencies have generally discouraged their use. In summary, while glandular pituitary supplements have a place in traditional health practices, robust scientific validation is lacking, and their use is not supported by contemporary evidence-based medicine.
