Evidence supporting the use of: Ashoka
For the health condition: PMS (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Saraca asoca (commonly known as Ashoka) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, particularly for female reproductive disorders including menstrual irregularities and symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Classical Ayurvedic texts describe Ashoka bark as a remedy for excessive bleeding, discomfort, and hormonal imbalances related to menstruation. Its use for "yoni rogas" (female reproductive tract disorders) is well-documented in traditional sources such as the Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridaya.
Scientific studies on Ashoka’s efficacy specifically for PMS are limited and mostly preclinical. Some small clinical studies and animal research suggest that Ashoka may have uterotonic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties, which could theoretically address some PMS symptoms like cramps, discomfort, and mood disturbances. However, these studies are sparse, often lack robust methodology, and usually do not focus directly on PMS but rather on broader gynecological complaints.
Therefore, the use of Ashoka for PMS is primarily justified by traditional and historical use, with minimal direct scientific validation at present. The evidence supporting its use for PMS specifically would be rated as 2 out of 5, reflecting strong traditional support but weak and indirect scientific evidence.
