Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bananas have traditionally been recommended for premenstrual syndrome (PMS) due to their nutrient content, particularly vitamin B6 and potassium. Folklore and traditional health advice suggest that vitamin B6 may help alleviate symptoms of PMS, such as mood swings and irritability, possibly by influencing neurotransmitter synthesis, including serotonin. Bananas are a moderate source of vitamin B6, and this has led to their inclusion in home remedies and dietary advice for PMS.

However, scientific evidence directly linking banana consumption to PMS relief is limited. Most studies investigating the effect of vitamin B6 for PMS use supplements at much higher doses than those provided by bananas. While some clinical trials have shown that vitamin B6 supplementation can reduce certain PMS symptoms, these findings do not specifically validate banana as a treatment. Similarly, potassium is important for fluid balance and may help with bloating, but direct studies on banana intake and PMS symptoms are lacking.

In summary, bananas are used in traditional and popular dietary advice for PMS due to their nutrient profile, but scientific validation specific to banana consumption for PMS relief is weak. The evidence for using bananas to treat PMS is therefore primarily traditional, with only modest scientific support for the individual nutrients they contain.
