Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) is primarily used to support and treat symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Its use is supported by both traditional medicine and a significant body of scientific research. Chaste tree has a long history in European herbal traditions for managing menstrual disorders. Modern clinical trials and systematic reviews have provided evidence supporting its efficacy, especially for symptoms such as breast tenderness, mood swings, irritability, and headaches associated with PMS.
The proposed mechanism of action is through modulation of the pituitary gland, leading to a decrease in prolactin secretion. This hormone regulation is thought to normalize the balance between estrogen and progesterone, which can be disrupted in women with PMS. Multiple randomized, placebo-controlled studies have shown that chaste tree extract can significantly reduce the overall severity of PMS symptoms compared to placebo. For example, a 2017 Cochrane review concluded that Vitex agnus-castus may be more effective than placebo for global improvement of PMS symptoms, although the quality of evidence ranged from moderate to low.
Adverse effects reported are generally mild, such as gastrointestinal upset or mild skin reactions. However, its use should be avoided in pregnancy or while using certain hormone therapies without medical advice. Overall, chaste tree is a well-researched herbal remedy for PMS, with scientific evidence supporting its use, though further high-quality studies are warranted to confirm optimal dosing and long-term safety.
