For the health condition: PMS (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Evodia (Evodia rutaecarpa), also known as Wu Zhu Yu in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal traditions. Its primary uses in TCM include alleviating digestive disorders, headaches, and abdominal pain. Although it is not one of the most common herbs specifically prescribed for premenstrual syndrome (PMS), some traditional formulas that support menstrual health include Evodia as one of several ingredients. The rationale in TCM for its inclusion is primarily related to its warming properties and its ability to promote the flow of Qi and alleviate pain, which may indirectly help with symptoms experienced during PMS, such as abdominal discomfort or bloating.
Scientifically, however, there is very limited evidence to support Evodia's use for PMS. Most research on Evodia has focused on its potential analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and gastrointestinal effects, rather than its impact on hormonal or psychological aspects of PMS. No high-quality clinical trials have specifically evaluated Evodia for PMS symptom relief. Therefore, while there is a traditional basis for its use as part of broader menstrual support, modern scientific validation for this purpose is lacking.
