Evidence supporting the use of: Magnesium Citrate
For the health condition: PMS (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Magnesium, including forms such as magnesium citrate, has been studied for its potential role in alleviating symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Several clinical trials and systematic reviews have found that magnesium supplementation may help reduce common PMS symptoms such as mood swings, irritability, bloating, and breast tenderness. The proposed mechanisms include magnesium’s involvement in neurotransmitter regulation (notably serotonin), modulation of hormonal fluctuations, and its effects on muscle relaxation and fluid balance.
A 2017 review in Magnesium Research and a 2020 meta-analysis in Gynecological Endocrinology both concluded that magnesium supplementation, either alone or in combination with vitamin B6, can provide modest but statistically significant relief from PMS symptoms. However, the evidence is not entirely consistent, with some studies showing minimal or no effect, and the optimal dose and formulation (such as citrate versus other salts) remain unclear.
Magnesium citrate is often used due to its higher bioavailability compared to some other forms. While more research is needed to establish standardized treatment protocols, current scientific evidence does support the use of magnesium supplementation as a reasonable adjunctive approach for PMS symptom management, particularly for individuals with low dietary magnesium intake or marginal magnesium deficiency.
