Evidence supporting the use of: Magnesium citrate malate
For the health condition: PMS (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Magnesium supplementation—including forms like magnesium citrate malate—has some scientific support for alleviating certain symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Several clinical studies and reviews suggest that magnesium may help reduce PMS symptoms such as mood swings, bloating, breast tenderness, and migraines. The proposed mechanisms include magnesium's role in neurotransmitter regulation (notably serotonin), hormone modulation, and its involvement in reducing inflammation and muscle cramping.
However, while magnesium in general has been evaluated, there is little direct research on the specific form, magnesium citrate malate, for PMS. Most studies use magnesium oxide, magnesium sulfate, or unspecified magnesium salts. The absorption and bioavailability of magnesium citrate malate are generally considered good, which could theoretically make it effective. Nonetheless, the evidence for magnesium as a class is mixed: some randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses demonstrate modest benefit, while others show little or no effect.
Clinical guidelines occasionally mention magnesium as a possible adjunct for PMS management, usually with the caveat that evidence is not strong or consistent. Overall, while there is a scientific rationale and some supportive data, the evidence base is moderate at best, and more high-quality, targeted studies are needed.
