Evidence supporting the use of: Miroestrol
For the health condition: PMS (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Miroestrol is a phytoestrogenic compound found mainly in the tuberous root of Pueraria mirifica, a plant traditionally used in Thai herbal medicine. Its use for premenstrual syndrome (PMS) relief is primarily based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. Historically, Pueraria mirifica has been consumed for its purported estrogen-like effects, believed to help alleviate symptoms related to hormonal fluctuations such as those experienced during PMS—these include mood changes, breast tenderness, and bloating.
However, while there is some traditional use of Pueraria mirifica and its extracts for female health and menopausal symptoms, scientific studies specifically investigating miroestrol or Pueraria mirifica for PMS are scarce. Most research has focused on menopausal symptoms rather than PMS, and results are not directly transferable. The available evidence for its effectiveness in PMS is therefore extremely limited, and the rationale for use is largely inferred from its general estrogenic activity and anecdotal or folk medicine reports.
In summary, the use of miroestrol to support or treat PMS is grounded in traditional practices and beliefs, with little direct scientific evidence to support its efficacy for this particular condition.
