Evidence supporting the use of: Raspberry (various)
For the health condition: PMS (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Raspberry (most often referring to red raspberry leaf, Rubus idaeus) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for women’s reproductive health, including support for symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Historical texts and folk medicine sources suggest that raspberry leaf tea was used to "tone" the uterus and alleviate menstrual discomforts such as cramping and bloating. However, despite its frequent recommendation by herbalists and in traditional health systems, there is scant scientific evidence to support its efficacy for PMS symptoms specifically. Most available studies on raspberry leaf focus on its use during pregnancy and labor rather than the menstrual cycle or PMS. A few in vitro and animal studies have investigated the leaf’s potential to relax smooth muscle, but these do not directly translate to proven benefits in PMS for humans. In summary, the use of raspberry (leaf) for PMS rests primarily on traditional use, with very limited clinical research to validate these claims.
