Evidence supporting the use of: Red Raspberry
For the health condition: PMS (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Red raspberry (Rubus idaeus) leaf has a long history of traditional use in supporting women's reproductive health, including the management of symptoms related to premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Historically, herbalists and midwives have recommended red raspberry leaf tea as a uterine tonic, believed to help regulate menstrual cycles, ease menstrual cramps, and reduce PMS symptoms such as bloating and irritability. The traditional rationale is rooted in the leaf’s content of tannins, flavonoids, and fragrine, an alkaloid said to tone the muscles of the pelvic region.
However, while these traditional uses are well-documented in folk medicine and herbal compendia, there is scant scientific evidence to validate the efficacy of red raspberry leaf specifically for PMS. Only a small number of laboratory and animal studies have investigated its effects, generally focusing on uterine muscle contraction and antioxidant properties, rather than direct relief of PMS symptoms in humans. High-quality clinical trials examining red raspberry leaf for PMS are lacking. As a result, its use for this condition is primarily supported by tradition rather than modern scientific research.
