Evidence supporting the use of: Sweet Orange alcohol
For the health condition: PMS (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis) essential oil and its preparations, including alcohol extracts, have been used traditionally in aromatherapy and some herbal medicine practices to support mood and alleviate symptoms like irritability or mild discomfort sometimes associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). The rationale is typically based on Sweet Orange’s calming aroma and anecdotal reports of mood-lifting effects.
However, scientific validation for the use of Sweet Orange alcohol extract specifically for PMS is minimal. Most available studies focus on the essential oil, not alcohol extracts, and often examine generalized anxiety or mood states rather than PMS directly. Some small studies indicate that inhalation of Sweet Orange essential oil may reduce anxiety and improve mood, which could be indirectly relevant for emotional symptoms of PMS. There is little to no clinical evidence supporting its efficacy for physical symptoms (e.g., bloating, cramps) related to PMS.
In summary, the use of Sweet Orange alcohol (or essential oil) for PMS is primarily supported by tradition and anecdotal use, rather than robust scientific research. The evidence base is limited and does not allow for strong recommendations in this context.
