Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Vervain (Verbena officinalis, or simply "vervain" when unspecified) has a long history of use in European herbal traditions as a "nervine" and mild relaxant. Its traditional applications include alleviating symptoms related to nervous tension, mild depression, and headache—symptoms that can be present in premenstrual syndrome (PMS). PMS Type C, characterized primarily by carbohydrate cravings and symptoms such as headache, fatigue, and mood swings, is sometimes addressed in traditional herbalism with nervines like vervain. However, there is minimal direct traditional evidence specifically linking vervain to the treatment of PMS Type C, and virtually no scientific studies have evaluated vervain for PMS, let alone this specific subtype. Its historical use is more broadly for women's health and nervous complaints.

Scientific literature does not support vervain's effectiveness for PMS Type C. Any rationale for its use rests primarily on the herb's reputation for calming the nervous system and perhaps relieving headache or tension. Modern clinical research is lacking on this topic. Thus, vervain’s use for PMS Type C is justified mostly by tradition with indirect reasoning, rather than by scientific validation or robust traditional specificity.
