For the health condition: PMS Type D
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Asoka (Saraca asoca) is primarily used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for the support and treatment of various gynecological disorders, including symptoms related to menstruation. In the context of PMS Type D (which is characterized by depressive symptoms such as mood swings, irritability, and depression), Asoka is not specifically mentioned in modern biomedical literature as having direct efficacy. However, in Ayurveda, Asoka bark has been used for centuries to address "yoni vyapad" (female reproductive tract disorders), heavy bleeding, and dysmenorrhea. Some classical texts also describe its use in mood-related symptoms associated with hormonal imbalance. The evidence supporting its use for PMS Type D is largely anecdotal and based on traditional formulations rather than robust clinical research. There are a few preclinical and small clinical studies suggesting that Asoka may have some effect on uterine health and possibly on hormonal regulation, but high-quality trials focusing specifically on PMS or mood symptoms are lacking. Therefore, the justification for its use in PMS Type D is grounded in its traditional role in women’s health, not in direct scientific validation for depressive symptoms of PMS.
