Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Asoka (Saraca indica) is a tree whose bark has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine to manage various gynecological conditions, including menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, and premenstrual syndromes. The traditional rationale for its use in PMS, especially PMS Type H (characterized by bloating and water retention, often due to estrogen excess or imbalance), is based on ancient Ayurvedic texts, which describe Asoka as a uterine tonic and as having properties that are believed to balance female hormones and alleviate symptoms associated with the menstrual cycle. Some classical Ayurvedic formulations containing Asoka bark are still used in India for regulating menstrual flow and reducing excessive bleeding and discomfort. Scientific evidence supporting Asoka's efficacy in PMS, specifically Type H, is limited. While some in vitro and animal studies suggest potential estrogen-modulating and anti-inflammatory effects of Asoka extracts, robust clinical trials in humans—especially targeting PMS Type H symptoms such as water retention—are lacking. Most of the support for its use comes from traditional practice rather than well-established scientific validation. As such, while Asoka continues to be used in traditional medicine for female reproductive health, the strength of evidence specifically for PMS Type H is modest and largely based on historical precedent rather than rigorous, contemporary clinical research.
