Rating (out of 5): 2
Dong quai (Angelica sinensis) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb widely used for various gynecological conditions, including premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Specifically, PMS Type H (Hyperhydration) is characterized by symptoms such as bloating, breast tenderness, and water retention. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), dong quai is considered a "female tonic" and is believed to nourish the blood, regulate menstrual cycles, and alleviate a range of menstrual complaints.
Historically, dong quai has been combined with other herbs to address menstrual irregularities, cramps, and PMS symptoms. The rationale for its use in PMS Type H is rooted in its reputation for improving blood circulation and reducing stagnation, which, according to TCM, may help relieve fluid retention and swelling. However, while the herb is commonly recommended in TCM for PMS in general, there is limited specific documentation for its effectiveness in PMS Type H (hyperhydration) in either Western or Eastern texts.
Scientific evidence supporting dong quai for PMS is limited and inconsistent. Most clinical studies have focused on its effects when used in multi-herb formulas, not as a single agent. There is minimal direct research on dong quai’s impact on water retention or the specific symptoms of PMS Type H. As a result, the use of dong quai for PMS Type H remains primarily traditional, with anecdotal and historical usage informing its role rather than robust scientific validation.
