Flax fiber, derived from the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum), is a rich source of dietary fiber and also contains lignans, which are phytoestrogens—plant-derived compounds that can interact with estrogen receptors in the body. PMS Type H is characterized primarily by symptoms of water retention, bloating, and breast tenderness, often linked to hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle. Several studies have explored the potential of flaxseed (and its fiber/lignans) to modulate hormonal balance, especially estrogen, which may be relevant to PMS symptoms. Clinical trials and observational studies indicate that flaxseed consumption can alter estrogen metabolism, increasing the ratio of less potent to more potent estrogen metabolites. Some small studies suggest that flaxseed supplementation may reduce breast pain and cyclical mastalgia, symptoms that overlap with PMS Type H. Furthermore, the fiber component of flaxseed can improve bowel regularity and support overall hormonal detoxification by promoting excretion of excess estrogens. While these mechanisms are promising, direct high-quality clinical evidence specifically linking flax fiber to improvement in PMS Type H symptoms is limited. Most studies use whole flaxseed or flaxseed powder, not isolated flax fiber, and sample sizes are often small. Thus, while there is a plausible scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence, more robust clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy for this specific PMS subtype.
