Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Montanoa tomentosa, commonly known as "zoapatle," is a plant traditionally used in Mexican ethnomedicine, particularly for women's reproductive health. The primary historical uses include inducing menstruation, facilitating childbirth, and as an abortifacient. Its use for symptoms resembling premenstrual syndrome (PMS), especially PMS Type H (hyperhydration, characterized by bloating and water retention), is not well-documented in scientific literature. However, in some traditional contexts, zoapatle has been used to regulate menstrual cycles and potentially address menstrual-related discomforts, which may overlap with certain PMS symptoms. There are very few, if any, clinical or pre-clinical studies specifically evaluating the efficacy of Montanoa tomentosa for PMS Type H or for the management of bloating and fluid retention. Most available studies focus on its potential uterotonic and abortifacient properties rather than on PMS symptom relief. Therefore, its use for PMS Type H is primarily based on tradition rather than scientific validation, and the evidence for this application is weak and not specific.
