Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Vitex, also known as chaste tree or Vitex agnus-castus, has a long history of traditional use in treating various menstrual disorders, including symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). PMS Type H is characterized by symptoms related to "hyperhydration," such as bloating and breast tenderness, which are often linked to hormonal imbalances, particularly excess estrogen or relative progesterone deficiency. In traditional herbal medicine, Vitex has been employed to help regulate menstrual cycles and address symptoms such as breast swelling and fluid retention, which overlap with PMS Type H.
The traditional use of Vitex for PMS symptoms is widespread, especially in European and Mediterranean herbalism. The rationale is based on the herb's purported effect on the pituitary gland, specifically its ability to modulate prolactin levels, potentially restoring the balance of estrogen and progesterone. This hormonal balancing is thought to alleviate symptoms like breast tenderness and water retention.
While there is moderate scientific evidence supporting Vitex for general PMS symptoms, studies rarely differentiate between PMS subtypes such as Type H. Some clinical trials have shown Vitex to be effective in reducing overall PMS symptoms, especially mastalgia (breast pain), which may be relevant for PMS Type H. However, direct evidence for its effect specifically on "hyperhydration" symptoms is limited, so the strength of evidence is rated as moderate (3/5) and based largely on tradition.
