Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Saraca asoca (commonly known as Asoka or Ashoka) has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine, especially for female reproductive health issues, including menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, and various menstrual disorders. Its use for PMS Type P (premenstrual syndrome characterized predominantly by pain, such as cramps and backache) is justified primarily by this traditional background. Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridaya mention Asoka as a remedy to regulate menstruation and relieve associated symptoms. The bark of the Asoka tree is often used in classical formulations like Ashokarishta, which is prescribed for alleviating menstrual pain and related complaints.

However, while traditional use is robust, scientific validation is limited. Some animal studies and a few small clinical investigations suggest anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and uterine tonic effects of Asoka extracts, which might rationalize its use for menstrual pain. Yet, large-scale, high-quality human studies are lacking. Thus, its evidence rating is moderate for tradition but low for rigorous scientific substantiation.

In summary, Asoka is used to support or treat PMS Type P mainly because of its longstanding use in traditional medicine systems, with only preliminary scientific support for its efficacy in this context.
