Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Curcuma comosa is traditionally used in Southeast Asian herbal medicine, particularly in Thai and Indonesian cultures, for women’s health, including alleviating symptoms related to menstruation. PMS Type P (premenstrual pain, including cramps and backache) is an application rooted in these traditional practices. Practitioners have used Curcuma comosa rhizome preparations to help relieve dysmenorrhea (painful periods), abdominal discomfort, and other menstrual complaints. The traditional use is likely based on the herb’s reputed anti-inflammatory and muscle-relaxant properties.

Limited scientific studies exist specifically addressing Curcuma comosa’s effects on PMS or menstrual pain in humans. Some animal studies and in vitro research suggest that extracts of Curcuma comosa may inhibit uterine contractions and possess anti-inflammatory effects, which could rationalize its use for menstrual pain. For example, studies in rats have found that Curcuma comosa extract can reduce uterine contractility and modulate prostaglandin levels, both relevant to dysmenorrhea. However, there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans, and no direct scientific validation for its use in PMS Type P. Therefore, while the traditional basis for its use is well-documented in ethnobotanical literature, strong scientific evidence is currently lacking.
