Evidence supporting the use of: Chinese Chastetree
For the health condition: PMS Type S
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chinese Chastetree (Vitex negundo) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for various gynecological complaints, including symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), PMS Type S refers to PMS symptoms with a predominance of swelling and soreness (such as breast tenderness or bloating), and Vitex negundo is sometimes included in formulas to address these manifestations. However, the evidence supporting its use is primarily anecdotal and based on tradition, rather than robust clinical research. While some preclinical studies have indicated anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, high-quality clinical trials specific to PMS Type S are lacking. Most of the scientific research on Vitex species for PMS has focused on Vitex agnus-castus (Chasteberry), not Vitex negundo. Therefore, although there is a traditional precedent for using Chinese Chastetree in this context, scientific validation is currently limited. On the evidence scale, it merits a 2 out of 5: there is traditional use and some biological plausibility, but definitive clinical evidence is lacking.
