Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium or Hedeoma pulegioides) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly for women’s reproductive health issues, including as an emmenagogue (to promote menstruation) and to ease menstrual discomfort. Its use in treating premenstrual syndrome (PMS), specifically PMS Type S (which is characterized by symptoms such as swelling, breast tenderness, and fluid retention), is based on traditional accounts rather than scientific evidence. Historically, pennyroyal tea was consumed to help relieve bloating and menstrual cramps. However, there is a lack of clinical trials or scientific studies that validate its effectiveness for PMS or specifically for PMS Type S symptoms. Modern herbal references continue to note its traditional use, but also warn of the plant’s high toxicity, particularly due to the compound pulegone, which can cause liver and kidney damage, as well as potentially fatal outcomes if consumed in high doses or as essential oil. Therefore, while pennyroyal’s use for menstruation-related complaints is well-documented in folk medicine, there is little to no modern scientific evidence to justify its use for PMS Type S, and its safety profile makes it unsuitable for self-medication.
