Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Alstonia scholaris, known as the "devil's tree" or "saptaparni," has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. In these traditions, the bark and leaves of Alstonia scholaris have been used to treat respiratory ailments, including cough, asthma, bronchitis, and sometimes pneumonia. The rationale for its use is based on its purported antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant properties. Traditional healers have employed decoctions of the bark to alleviate symptoms associated with lung infections and respiratory distress. Scientific studies on Alstonia scholaris are limited and mostly preclinical. Some laboratory and animal studies have shown that extracts from the plant exhibit antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects. For example, certain alkaloids and other phytochemicals in Alstonia scholaris have demonstrated activity against bacteria and inflammation in vitro and in animal models. However, direct evidence supporting its efficacy specifically against pneumonia in humans is lacking, and there are no well-conducted clinical trials validating its use for this condition. Thus, its use to support pneumonia is justified by tradition rather than robust scientific validation.
