Evidence supporting the use of: Ravinsara
For the health condition: Pneumonia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora, chemotype cineole) is traditionally used in aromatherapy and herbal medicine, particularly in Madagascar and parts of Europe, to help with respiratory conditions including colds, flu, and, less commonly, pneumonia. The essential oil is valued for its high 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) content, which has known expectorant and mild anti-inflammatory properties. Traditionally, Ravintsara oil is applied topically (with a carrier oil) or used in steam inhalations to help ease breathing and support the respiratory tract. However, there is a lack of direct clinical evidence or randomized controlled trials demonstrating effectiveness specifically for pneumonia. Most references to its use for pneumonia come from traditional practitioners and anecdotal reports, rather than peer-reviewed studies. The supporting evidence is therefore weak (rated 1), and based primarily on its general use for respiratory complaints rather than pneumonia per se. Ravintsara should not be considered a substitute for conventional medical treatment of pneumonia, which is a serious condition requiring prompt medical attention.
