For the health condition: Post Partum Depression
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Ashoka (Saraca asoca) has a long-standing place in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, particularly for women's health issues. In Ayurveda, Ashoka is considered a "female tonic" and is frequently used in formulations to manage gynecological disorders such as menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, and general uterine health. Its use specifically for post-partum depression (PPD), however, is less clear. Traditional texts cite Ashoka for its mood-enhancing and anxiolytic properties, and it is sometimes included in post-partum care regimens for women to support emotional and physical recovery after childbirth. The rationale is rooted more in its general "balancing" and restorative effects on the female reproductive system and psyche, rather than direct historical evidence for treating PPD as defined by modern medicine. Currently, there is very limited scientific research evaluating Ashoka for post-partum depression. Clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies specifically addressing its efficacy for PPD are lacking. Most available evidence is either anecdotal or extrapolated from its broader use in women's health. Thus, while Ashoka's use in this context is justified by tradition, the direct evidence supporting its efficacy for PPD is weak, warranting a low evidence rating.
