Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Albizia julibrissin, commonly known as the Persian Silk Tree or Mimosa, has a long history of traditional use in Chinese medicine, where it is referred to as "He Huan Pi" (the bark) and "He Huan Hua" (the flower). In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Albizia is used to "calm the spirit," alleviate anxiety, relieve insomnia, and support people experiencing emotional distress, including symptoms resembling post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The historical use for “relieving constraint” and “soothing the heart” has led to its reputation for emotional support, which is why it is sometimes recommended by herbalists for PTSD.

However, the scientific evidence supporting Albizia julibrissin’s efficacy for PTSD is limited. Some preclinical studies have indicated anxiolytic and antidepressant-like effects in animal models, possibly due to the presence of saponins and flavonoids with neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties. There are a handful of small studies and case reports suggesting benefits for mood disorders and insomnia, but there are no robust, high-quality clinical trials specifically supporting its use in PTSD. Thus, its use for PTSD is primarily rooted in tradition, with modest preliminary scientific support for related symptoms but not PTSD itself.
