Evidence supporting the use of: Bacoside
For the health condition: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bacoside, the primary active constituent of the herb Bacopa monnieri (commonly known as Brahmi), has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine as a cognitive enhancer and anxiolytic. In traditional Ayurvedic texts, Bacopa is described as a "medhya rasayana," an herb for rejuvenating the mind, improving memory, and reducing anxiety and stress. While it is not specifically cited in ancient texts as a treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)—a modern clinical diagnosis—Bacopa has historically been used to calm the mind and support emotional balance, which may be interpreted as relevant to some PTSD symptoms.
Scientific research on Bacopa and bacosides has shown some anxiolytic and adaptogenic effects in animal studies and small human trials, suggesting potential for reducing anxiety and cognitive deficits related to stress. However, direct evidence supporting its use specifically for PTSD is limited, and clinical trials targeting PTSD populations are lacking. Thus, while there is some traditional rationale and preliminary scientific interest, robust clinical validation for bacoside’s use in PTSD is absent. The rating of 2 reflects the gap between traditional use for general stress/anxiety and the lack of high-quality evidence for PTSD specifically.
