Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive compound derived from cannabis, has gained attention for its potential therapeutic effects in various mental health conditions, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The scientific evidence supporting the use of CBD for PTSD is emerging but remains limited and preliminary. Small-scale clinical studies and case series have suggested that CBD may help reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and diminish the frequency of nightmares in individuals with PTSD. For example, a 2019 case series published in The Permanente Journal found improvements in sleep and anxiety in a subset of patients using CBD. Another small study published in 2016 in the journal Frontiers in Pharmacology described the use of CBD as an adjunct to routine psychiatric care in a case of pediatric PTSD, with reported improvements in symptoms.

Preclinical research suggests that CBD may modulate the endocannabinoid system, which is involved in regulating mood and stress responses, and may influence memory reconsolidation processes relevant to traumatic memories. However, most studies are limited by small sample sizes, lack of control groups, and short duration. To date, there are no large-scale, well-controlled clinical trials definitively establishing CBD’s efficacy for PTSD, and regulatory bodies have not approved CBD as a treatment for PTSD. Thus, while there is scientific interest and some early evidence, the current level of support is modest, and more rigorous research is needed.
