Evidence supporting the use of: Phytocannabinoid (unspecified)
For the health condition: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Phytocannabinoids, particularly those derived from the cannabis plant such as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), have been investigated for their potential role in supporting or treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The scientific rationale is based on the interaction of cannabinoids with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is involved in modulating mood, memory, and stress responses—all relevant to PTSD pathology.
Several small-scale clinical studies and observational reports suggest that cannabinoids may help reduce symptoms of PTSD, including anxiety, insomnia, and nightmares. For example, some open-label studies and retrospective chart reviews have reported reductions in symptom severity among patients using medical cannabis. However, the evidence is limited by methodological weaknesses, such as small sample sizes, lack of control groups, and reliance on self-reported outcomes. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are scarce, but a few ongoing and recent RCTs are attempting to clarify efficacy and safety.
Current clinical guidelines do not endorse phytocannabinoids as first-line treatments for PTSD due to insufficient high-quality evidence and concerns about potential adverse effects (such as dependence and cognitive impairment). Nonetheless, there is a growing scientific interest, and some patients may use these substances off-label based on preliminary findings and patient-reported benefits. Overall, the evidence supporting phytocannabinoid use for PTSD is emerging but remains limited, justifying a moderate evidence rating.
