Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Asoka (Saraca asoca), also known as Ashoka, is primarily supported by traditional evidence for use in pregnancy-related concerns. In Ayurvedic medicine, Asoka bark has a long history of use in gynecological health, particularly for managing menstrual disorders, excessive uterine bleeding, and as a general uterine tonic. Classical Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita mention its use in promoting reproductive health and supporting women during various stages of their reproductive cycle. However, its direct application during pregnancy is more circumspect; traditionally, it has been recommended mainly for menstrual disorders and to support uterine function pre- and post-pregnancy, rather than as a supplement during pregnancy itself.
Scientific studies on Asoka are limited, and there is a lack of robust clinical trials evaluating its safety and efficacy in pregnant women. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest potential uterine tonic and anti-inflammatory properties, but these findings have not been substantiated in human clinical trials, particularly in the context of pregnancy. Therefore, while Asoka is traditionally referenced in the context of women's reproductive health, there is insufficient scientific evidence to conclusively support or recommend its use during pregnancy for modern clinical practice.
