Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bifidobacteria is a genus of probiotic bacteria commonly found in the human gut. Its use during pregnancy has been explored in some scientific studies, primarily for supporting digestive health and modulating the immune system rather than directly treating pregnancy-specific conditions. Some research suggests that supplementation with Bifidobacteria during pregnancy may help reduce the risk of gestational diabetes, lower the incidence of atopic dermatitis in infants, and improve maternal gut health. However, most studies are small, and results are not always consistent.

Systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials have shown that probiotic supplementation including Bifidobacteria is generally safe during pregnancy. There is some evidence that these probiotics can help prevent or reduce constipation, a common issue during pregnancy, and may have a modest effect on reducing the risk of certain allergic conditions in offspring. However, the evidence is not robust enough to strongly recommend Bifidobacteria as a treatment for pregnancy-related conditions outside of general digestive support and possibly allergy prevention in infants.

Overall, while there is scientific interest and some low to moderate quality evidence supporting the use of Bifidobacteria for certain aspects of pregnancy health, the evidence base is not strong (rated 2/5). More large-scale, well-designed studies are needed to better establish efficacy and safety.
