Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Montanoa tomentosa, commonly known as zoapatle, has a long history of use in traditional Mexican medicine, particularly among indigenous populations. Traditionally, the leaves and stems of the plant have been used by midwives to induce menstruation, facilitate childbirth, and promote uterine contractions. It has been employed as an emmenagogue (to stimulate menstrual flow) and, at times, to aid in labor or as an abortifacient. Ethnobotanical surveys and historical records from Mexico document these uses, indicating the plant’s cultural significance in reproductive health, especially related to pregnancy and childbirth.

However, scientific evidence supporting the safety or efficacy of Montanoa tomentosa for use during pregnancy is extremely limited. A few animal studies have shown that extracts from the plant can induce uterine contractions, but there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans. Furthermore, its traditional use to induce labor or menstruation suggests it may not be safe for pregnant women except under strict supervision, as it could potentially cause miscarriage or preterm labor. Mainstream medical sources generally caution against using this herb during pregnancy due to the paucity of safety data and potential risks. Therefore, while its use is rooted in tradition, scientific validation is minimal.
