Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine as a remedy for various male sexual health concerns, including premature ejaculation (PE). In classical Ayurvedic texts, ashwagandha is described as a "rasayana" or rejuvenative tonic, believed to enhance vitality, improve sexual performance, and reduce stress—factors often implicated in PE. The herb is thought to work by strengthening the nervous system, reducing anxiety, and supporting hormonal balance, which could theoretically help address some of the psychological and physical contributors to premature ejaculation.

However, scientific validation for ashwagandha's efficacy in treating PE is limited. Most modern research has focused on its effects on stress, testosterone levels, and general sexual function, rather than specifically on premature ejaculation. A handful of small studies and case reports have suggested potential benefits in improving overall sexual satisfaction and function, but high-quality randomized controlled trials targeting PE are lacking. Some studies suggest ashwagandha may help reduce anxiety and improve stamina, which could indirectly benefit men with PE, especially when stress or psychological factors are involved.

Overall, while there is a strong tradition of ashwagandha use for male sexual health in Ayurveda, scientific evidence specifically supporting its use for premature ejaculation remains weak. As such, its use for this purpose is more justified by traditional practices than by robust clinical evidence.
