Asoka (Saraca asoca) is a well-known herb in Ayurvedic medicine, traditionally used for female reproductive health. Its bark and flowers have been used for centuries to manage gynecological disorders such as menorrhagia (excessive menstrual bleeding), dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), and other menstrual irregularities. The use of Asoka is primarily based on its reputed ability to support uterine health and regulate menstrual cycles, which indirectly relates to the balance of female hormones, including progesterone. However, the concept of a “Progesterone body system” is a modern construct and does not have a direct equivalent in traditional texts. There is little scientific research specifically linking Asoka to increased or directly supported progesterone levels. A few preclinical and small clinical studies suggest that Asoka may have uterotonic and estrogen-modulating effects, but robust, high-quality clinical trials are lacking. Thus, while the traditional use for menstrual and female reproductive health is well-established, scientific validation for its direct effect on progesterone is limited. Most references to Asoka for “progesterone support” are extrapolated from its historical use in managing menstrual disorders rather than from direct biochemical evidence.
