Shataverins are a group of steroidal saponins found in the plant Asparagus racemosus, commonly known as Shatavari. In Ayurvedic medicine, Shatavari has a long history of use as a female reproductive tonic, believed to support hormonal balance, fertility, and overall reproductive health. The traditional rationale for its use in supporting the progesterone body system stems from its reputed effects on female hormone regulation and menstrual health, including the management of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menopausal symptoms. However, direct scientific evidence linking shataverins or Shatavari to increased progesterone levels or direct support of the "progesterone body system" is limited. Some preclinical studies suggest estrogenic activity and potential effects on reproductive tissues, but human clinical trials are scarce, and those available do not robustly measure progesterone outcomes. Thus, while its use is justified by traditional practices, and there is some preliminary biological plausibility, the current scientific evidence is not strong or conclusive.
