Vitex (also known as chaste tree or Vitex agnus-castus) has a long history of traditional use in supporting female reproductive health, particularly in balancing hormones such as progesterone. Traditional herbal medicine systems, especially in Europe, have used Vitex for centuries to address menstrual irregularities, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and symptoms thought to be related to low progesterone, such as luteal phase defects. The purported mechanism is that Vitex may act on the pituitary gland to influence the release of luteinizing hormone (LH), which in turn can support the body's natural production of progesterone during the menstrual cycle.
There is some modern scientific research suggesting that Vitex may be beneficial for certain menstrual disorders and PMS, but the evidence is not robust or universally conclusive. Most studies are small, short-term, and often do not directly measure progesterone levels. Instead, they focus on symptom relief. While some trials indicate improvements in PMS and cyclic mastalgia, direct scientific validation of Vitex specifically supporting the "progesterone body system" remains limited. Therefore, while traditional use is strong and there is modest scientific support for related indications, the overall evidence for direct progesterone support rates as moderate.
