Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 5

Progesterone is scientifically validated for use in treating low progesterone levels. Progesterone is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the ovaries, and its deficiency can lead to menstrual irregularities, infertility, and symptoms such as abnormal uterine bleeding. The use of exogenous progesterone to supplement or replace endogenous progesterone is a well-established medical practice. Clinical guidelines recommend progesterone therapy in several evidence-based scenarios: for example, to support the luteal phase in women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (ART), to treat secondary amenorrhea, and to prevent preterm birth in certain at-risk pregnancies. Numerous randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that progesterone supplementation can restore normal menstrual cycles, support early pregnancy, and reduce the risk of miscarriage in women with documented luteal phase defects. Additionally, progesterone is used in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for women with premature ovarian insufficiency or during menopause to oppose the effects of unopposed estrogen and reduce the risk of endometrial hyperplasia. The efficacy and safety of pharmaceutical-grade progesterone (micronized progesterone or progesterone in oil) are well-documented in the medical literature and supported by guidelines from reproductive and endocrine societies worldwide.
